Samuel "Darrell" O. Ackels
Samuel (Darrell) Otis Ackels was born at home in Polk County on October 24, 1942 to Wilbur and Rosa (Gildon) Ackels. On February 17, 2021 at 11:47 pm Sam transitioned to his heavenly home after almost a year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Sam’s precious mom, Rosa, passed when Sam was 11 years old, leaving him to run a milk route with his dad for many years.
Sam went into the U.S. Army at the young age of 16, having his dad sign for him. He spent his service in Germany driving tanks and jeeps for high up officials.
When Sam returned from service in 1963 he went on a blind date and met the love of his life, Jeannie. The two were married on April 6, 1963 and were married for 57 years. To this union, two daughters were born. He was their protector, teacher, leader, and first love in their lives. His family was first and most important in his life. He always worked hard to provide for them.
Sam was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa, his father, Wilbur, and two brothers, James (Cotton) and Carl.
Sam is leaving his best friend and wife Jeannie of Marshfield. He was Daddy and hero to daughter Sandi (Jerry) Williams of Marshfield, and daughter Melissa Ackels of Marshfield. He is survived by a host of family and many great friends. He was Papa and was super proud of his five grandchildren, Laci (Michael) Quinn, Marshfield, Zeb Burnett, Marshfield, Zetta (Dustin) Spellman, Nixa, Staci Williams, Marshfield, and Afton (Savannah) Palmer, Conway, and his great grandkids, Ryleigh Breanne Handle, Nathan James Clark, Preston Samuel Joon Quinn, Zealand Dale Quinn, Hailie Elaine Michelle Pearcy Spellman, Ares Glen Scott Spellman, Ronin Louis Joe Spellman, and Mercedez Jo Ann Palmer. He loved nothing more than holding a new baby.
Sam was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved working with his hands and taking Jeannie for rides on their bike. You could always tell where he was because he was always happily whistling. He was a knife maker and gardener. He was a straight shooter, being both tough and gentle. He had the bluest eyes, best chuckle, and enjoyed giving his family a hard time. He was a good man, always helping others.
He left behind a huge void for many. He was a true hero to his family and a great friend to many. He will be truly missed but never forgotten. We will treasure the memories.
