John C. Foster

John Charles Foster, of Springfield, Missouri, was born March 2, 1960, to John Fyan Foster and Dixie June (Wood) Foster in Norfolk Virginia. He passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2023, in his home, surrounded by family and friends.

John was fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience living in several places, including: Norfolk, VA;  central and southern CA; Annapolis, MD; Ankara, Turkey; and the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, FL.   At the age of 12, while living in Turkey, John traveled to Germany, where he was diagnosed with a rare, progressively degenerative neuromuscular disease.  He was then faced with the prognosis of a 22 year life expectancy.

By 1974, at the age 14, John moved with his family back to their father’s hometown of Marshfield, MO.  He was the fifth generation of “John” Foster to live in Marshfield.

Despite his prognosis.  John was very active in the work of the 400 acre cattle and haying operation.

Besides his years of work on the family farm, John was also employed at the old Marshfield Horse Motel.

Following this work experience John enrolled at Crowder College, Neosho, MO, in 1980, to study Motel, Hotel and Restaurant Management.

In 1996 John, by this time wheelchair-bound, moved to Springfield, where he lived for the past 27 years.  With the assistance of dedicated caregivers, he was able to live an independent, productive life, forging new relationships.

John volunteered with several organizations. He chaired the Client Advocacy Council for Greater Ozarks ARC, Springfield, MO.  He also volunteered at the Southwest Center for Independent Living, Springfield, MO.  John was recognized for his years of work with the Greater Ozarks Area Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

John was a member of the Marshfield United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by this father and his mother.

He is survived by his sister, Tracy Foster Gray and Gary of Marshfield; brother, Robert Foster of Marshfield; his stepmother, Anne Foster Armstrong of Marshfield; five nieces and nephews, John Gray, Annie Gray, John (Jack) Foster, Claire Foster, Rose Foster; and many other relatives.
